What is a Personal Care Assistant (PCA)?
Per the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) of Virginia, a “Personal Care Assistant” is one who provides personal care services.

Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) regulates the activities of PCAs.
How does the Personal Care Assistant (PCA) program work?
An applicant can register for the Personal Care Assistant program via www.vahealthcareinstitute.org. The applicant completes the registration process as outlined on the website. After the background check is completed, the applicant will be informed of their status, and will be directed to continue the registration process by choosing a payment option and completing a checklist before beginning class.
What is the length of the Personal Care Assistant (PCA) program?
The Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) requires each Personal Care Assistant to complete 40 hours of instruction. The applicant can receive their certification upon successful completion of the Personal Care Assistant program in as little as two weekends, or as much as two weeks.

Does the Virginia Healthcare Institute offer a payment plan?
Yes, the Virginia Healthcare Institute (VHI) offers two payment options. There is a $100, non-refundable fee which includes your background check and administrative fees . The additional balance can be paid in full.
If I have been convicted of a crime can I sign up for class?
You may still take the class. However, applicant background must be free of barrier crime.

To become a Personal Care Assistant (PCA), a student must satisfactorily complete this course, as outlined by Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS).

This program is not recognized by the Virginia Board of Nursing, other state boards of nursing, or nursing and medical facilities.
